भारत सरकार के महिला एवं बाल विकास मंत्रालय द्वारा 1 से 7 अगस्त 2026 तक पूरे देश में विश्व स्तनपान सप्ताह मनाया जाएगा। इस अभियान का उद्देश्य परिवारों, समुदायों और स्वास्थ्य सेवा प्रदाताओं के बीच स्तनपान की शीघ्र शुरुआत, पहले छह महीनों तक केवल स्तनपान और उचित पूरक आहार के साथ-साथ दो वर्ष और उससे अधिक समय तक स्तनपान जारी रखने के बारे में जागरूकता पैदा करना है।
स्तनपान शिशु के जीवित रहने, स्वस्थ विकास और संज्ञानात्मक विकास के लिए सबसे प्रभावी उपायों में से एक है। मंत्रालय परिवारों से आग्रह करता है कि वे सुनिश्चित करें कि प्रत्येक नवजात शिशु को जन्म के पहले घंटे के भीतर (गोल्डन आवर) माँ का दूध मिले। पहला दूध, कोलोस्ट्रम, जिसे अक्सर शिशु का पहला प्राकृतिक टीका कहा जाता है, एंटीबॉडी और आवश्यक पोषक तत्वों से भरपूर होता है और इसे फेंका नहीं जाना चाहिए।
पहले छह महीनों तक शिशु को केवल स्तनपान कराना चाहिए और पानी, शहद, घुट्टी, ग्लूकोज या डिब्बा बंद दूध बिल्कुल नहीं दिया जाना चाहिए। इस दौरान शिशु की सभी पोषण और पानी संबंधी ज़रूरतें केवल स्तनपान से ही पूरी होती हैं। छह महीने बाद, पूरक आहार शुरू करना चाहिए और साथ ही दो साल या उससे अधिक समय तक स्तनपान जारी रखना चाहिए।
माताओं को जन्म के बाद शिशु के साथ निकट संपर्क बनाए रखने, बार-बार स्तनपान कराने और आवश्यकता पड़ने पर आशा कार्यकर्ताओं, आंगनवाड़ी कार्यकर्ताओं या स्वास्थ्य सेवा प्रदाताओं से मार्गदर्शन लेने के लिए प्रोत्साहित किया जाता है। कामकाजी माताएं स्तन दूध निकालकर सुरक्षित रूप से स्टोर कर सकती हैं। स्तनपान माताओं के लिए भी फायदेमंद है—प्रसवोत्तर स्वास्थ्य लाभ में सहायता करता है और स्तन और अंडाशय के कैंसर, टाइप-2 मधुमेह और प्रसवोत्तर अवसाद के जोखिम को कम करता है।
मंत्रालय स्वास्थ्य पेशेवरों, सामुदायिक कार्यकर्ताओं, परिवारों और नागरिकों से एक ऐसा अनुकूल वातावरण बनाने का आह्वान करता है जहां प्रत्येक मां को स्तनपान कराने के लिए सशक्त बनाया जा सके और प्रत्येक बच्चे को जीवन में सर्वोत्तम संभव शुरुआत मिल सके।
